REMPART CONSTRUCTION SITE 2024

The year 2024 marked a major step forward in the restoration of Sennecey-le-Grand’s historic heritage, with the launch of the REMPART volunteer construction site at the Saint-Claude Hermitage.

Organized in collaboration with the Sennecey Patrimoine Association and the REMPART network, this initiative brought together volunteers and heritage enthusiasts from across France and beyond, united by a shared passion for preservation.

The Saint-Claude Hermitage, located on the wooded hill between Sennecey-le-Grand and Laives, dates back to the early 17th century. Long abandoned, this chapel and its surroundings are steeped in local history, serving as a symbol of spiritual heritage and community identity.

Through the 2024 project, the site once again became a place of life, learning, and exchange — an open-air classroom for traditional craftsmanship and heritage preservation.

Under the guidance of professional craftsmen and a heritage architect, participants experienced hands-on training in historical restoration. The workshop welcomed volunteers of all ages, from students discovering old trades to skilled artisans deepening their expertise.

During this session, the restoration team successfully reinforced the western wall, which was at risk of collapse, and revealed several original architectural elements, including a stone archway and an old bread oven.

Through this partnership with REMPART, Sennecey Patrimoine continues to reaffirm its mission:
To safeguard, restore, and share the living heritage of Sennecey-le-Grand for future generations.
